Madlib, Supreme Team, Percee P, Peanut Butter Wolf, J-rocc

So Nov 19th marked the day of the Stones Throw Tour coming through Vancouver. As per usual I slept on getting a ticket and almost didn't go to the show. As much as I love live shows, and Richards as a venue, I can't stand the sitting outside with no ticket policy they have. Around 10:30pm I heard that there was no line so Tut and myself linked and headed down to the show. After wasting about 5 minutes outside watching some drugged up/wasted dude spill water on himself and snap in and out of consciousness I proceeded inside. The 30 dollar door price immediately made me regret not buying an advance ticket. I was disappointed to learn that I had already missed Med and Percee P, the show apparently had an early start and I guess I never got the memo. Time for a drink. $6.50 later I was sipping a lukewarm Canadian and ready for an entertaining show.

As I directed my attention to the stage Madlib came on (did I miss a j-rocc set too?). Now I give full credit to the man for his work in the studio; he has pushed boundaries in creating new unique sounds and collaborated on some classic material (Yesterdays New Quintet, Madvillain, Lootpack and Jaylib specifically). That being said, I think he should put as much work into his live performances. His set list was short, barely touching his extensive catalogue, and several joints he would rap only part of the verses. Not quite what I had expected. OK on to Supreme Team.

At least this performance was somewhat interesting. It may not have livened up the crowd but it was at least pleasing to the ears. Peanut Butter Wolf closed the show with a set that included juggling, mixing and cutting music videos on a projection screen behind him. The man played Wu-tangs Triumph so I was satisfied even though the show rapped up by 1am and everyone was rushed out the building. After blowing all $50 that Tut had loaned me for cover and beer and getting about an hour and a half of entertainment I decided never to show up without an advance ticket again. Overall?

I hold myself partly to blame because of 1. not buying in advance, and 2. missing Percee P and Med (possibly J-rocc but I guess I will never know). At the same time I have been going to shows for 13 years now and I expect rappers to be LIVE when they're live.

PS Tut retracted his thumbs down shortly after this photo because he got to meet Percee P and get a CD signed by him (groupie love).
