On our radar since 2011′s Yellow Gold, Nickelus F has surfaced once again this year through a stream of Soundcloud hits and, most recently, last week’s Vices. Easily his best collection of work since his 2nd place finish in the Source’s Unsigned Hype battle way back in 2000, the 15 track album features F’s raw style coupled with some smooth production and even a Drake feature. Mixtape Monday: Juelz Santana “God Will’n”
Juelz is back! Or at least he will be by the end of the day. His first mixtape in half a decade, God Will’n plays precursor to the upcoming Born to Lose, Built to Win, due later this year. The fact that he’s prepping his first full-length since 2005 should get you hyped enough about this tape, let alone his verse on this joint with Rick Ross, Meek Mill and Fabolous. Lost in the shuffle between now and it’s original release date over a month ago, Niko Is’ 4th street release of 2012 solidified his spot on the site with 13 tracks including one with an Action Bronson feature. Mixtape Monday: The Best 12 of 2012
Ok so we’re a bit late on this one, but that’s what happens when you leave your year-end list to the actual last day of the year. Obviously our quality control is very high and we didn’t want to miss out on anything. Obviously. Anyways, there was no shortage of good music this year, and our beloved corner of free hip-hop was no exception. There was a lot of releases, but the quantity didn’t necessarily overshadow the quality; as the year drew to a close we even had to start posting multiple tapes every week just to keep up.
With that being said, peep our top 12 from ’12 above, some of them were posted when they dropped, a handful were honorable mentions, and a couple were slept on completely. But here they are now, download and streaming links as relevant as ever as we turn another page and start a new tab. Happy New New.
Mixtape Monday: SpaceGhostPurrp “B.M.W.”
Probably not the most lyrical option of the week, SGP’s latest is an almost obligatory post as a follow up to his remastered Mysterious Phonk full-length. That and there’s not really anyone else in the game stepping to the leader of the Raider Klan’s style and production right now. At least not this week.
